Kingdom of Tonga Web-site, Beijing China 2018

Welcome to the web-site of the Kingdom of Tonga in Beijing.

The Kingdom of Tonga comprises of 176 islands, stretches over about 800 kilometers (500 miles) in a north-south direction. The ancient Kingdom of Tonga is a Polynesian sovereign state, located just to the west of the International Dateline, and surrounded by its nearest neighbouring countries: Fiji and Wallis & Futuna to northwest, Samoa to the northeast, Niue to the East, and the Kermadec Islands (part of New Zealand) to the southwest.

The Tongan people live very close to nature, and the smiles and friendly faces of the locals together with the breeze and the warmth of the South Pacific Ocean can uplift your soul, making you feel that you belong to the chosen one. Tonga has four features that are quite unique and distinct and that help to differentiated it from the rest of the Pacific Islands: First, Tonga is the only surviving sovereign monarchy in the Pacific; second Tonga’s empire ruled the Pacific for more than four- hundred years, and that’s why it was never colonized by any foreign power; third Tonga is the first country in the world to greet the sun of every new day; and fourth, Captain Cook in his three voyages to the Pacific stopped over in the Kingdom of Tonga, and he admired so much the friendliness and the hospitality of the people that he named Tonga “ the Friendly Islands”.

Throughout the year, Tonga offers a variety of entertainments: cultural, sporting events, as well as activities such as whale –watching, sport fishing, diving or swimming in the clear blue water of the islands. Or you can just relax and stroll on its white sandy beaches. In May you can witness the Opening of the Parliament by His Majesty, the King of Tonga, where thousands of High Schools students proudly march with their school uniforms on the street of the capital Nuku’alofa with their own individual brass-bands. This will lead up to the religious conferences of different denominations, where you can watch all kinds of activities such as Tongan feast and many more cultural events. In June, you can join the locals in watching and participating in the island’s annual beauty contest or “Miss Heilala” week, with a block party and parade with floats, which leads up to the annual military parade, and the celebration of His Majesty King Tupou VI’s Royal Birthday on the 4th of July. If you decide to visit in July and toward the end of the year you can have a chance to either watch or take part in all kinds of summer activities such as rugby, golf, sport fishing, and many more activities.

With that respect, you should step away from towering skyscrapers and busy traffic and visit the Kingdom of Tonga where the past and the present are smoothly blended together, and where you will find an essential beauty of nature and its people that will convince you to return to its shore time and time again.
